Germany has taken the decision to dismiss head coach Hansi Flick after a devastating 4-1 loss to Japan in a friendly match. With the European Championships set to be hosted by Germany next summer, the German Football Association (DFB) felt it was necessary to make this change. Rudi Völler, alongside Hannes Wolf and Sandro Wagner, will assume the coaching responsibilities for Germany’s upcoming friendly against France.

Flick had previously weathered a disappointing World Cup campaign, where Germany was eliminated in the group stage. Unfortunately, the team’s performance did not improve afterward, failing to secure a victory in their last five matches. Flick initially conducted training on Sunday but was subsequently relieved of his duties.

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf explained, “The bodies of the DFB shared the same view that the national team now needs a new impulse. With next year’s Euro in sight, we need an enthusiastic mood and confidence.”

Hansi Flick, who took over the national team after leaving Bayern Munich in May 2021, had signed a three-year contract intended to last until the end of Euro 2024. However, his tenure was cut short due to disappointing results, with only 12 wins in 25 matches. Flick had previously served as Joachim Löw’s assistant for eight years before transitioning to head coach at Bayern Munich.

Notably, this loss to Japan was not an isolated incident, as Germany had previously suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Japan at the World Cup in Qatar. This early exit from the tournament was due to goal difference.

Flick’s tenure began promisingly, with eight consecutive victories. However, his performance subsequently declined, with only four wins in his final 17 matches, culminating in the recent humbling defeat by Japan.

The German FA is now actively seeking a replacement for the vacant coaching position. One potential candidate is Julian Nagelsmann, who succeeded Flick at Bayern Munich and is currently without a coaching role. In the interim, Rudi Völler, a former Germany head coach, will lead the coaching staff.

Völler expressed the urgency of finding a coach who can quickly redirect and prepare the team for the upcoming Euro tournament. The nation expects positive changes to elevate the team’s performance to their anticipated level.
